When they reach a certain amount, they level up and become stronger. Individual units can gain experience in battles. For example, Elves have a very strong defense value in the forest while they are extremely vulnerable in water. The defensive strength of a unit is affected by its race and the terrain it stands on. The game maps are structured as hex grids. Each race has its own unique characteristics along with their own weaknesses and strengths.
